Find rides and races by tag

We love just about every kind of cyclocross or gravel ride or race that’s out there, but sometimes it’s just that little something extra that makes an event special for you.

With that in mind we compiled a handy list of tags that you can use to find races that best suit your tastes.

If you’ve got any additional suggestions for tags, you can submit them to us via our Contact page.

Find rides and races by tag

In alphabetical order:

  • Club Race: These races are organised by local clubs, and probably won’t play any part in the calculation of series points at a state or national level. As a result, they’re a great option for trying the sport if you’re new to racing and want a low-key vibe.

  • Costumes Encouraged: Get your best and funniest costumes out of the drawer - these races will love it if you dress up!

  • First Timer Friendly: New to cyclocross? Don’t worry - the organisers of these races love having new riders along.

  • Food and Drink Onsite: Worked up an appetite after racing? No sweat - these races have food and drinks available.

  • Fun Formats: Pairs relays, running starts, handicaps - you’ll be able to encounter a different style of racing at these events than your standard mass start.

  • Graded by Ability: These races will group riders together based on their ability - usually into A, B and C Grades. Most club and state level races are graded by ability.

  • Graded by Age: These races group riders together based on how old riders are, usually in 5-year increments (i.e. 40-44, 45-49, 50-54). Most state championships, national series and national championships will grade their races based on age.

  • Gravel Grinder: These events leave the cyclocross course behind and head out into the gravel roads of the countryside. Most riders will be there to participate and take in the scenery, though a select few events will offer the chance to race for glory and bragging rights.

  • Masters Racing Available: Are you a bit older and don’t want to get crushed by riders half your age? These races have grades for Masters racers, either because they’re graded by age or because there are separate masters grades based on ability (e.g. Men’s Masters A alongside a standard Men’s A Grade).

  • MTBs Welcome: Only got an old mountain bike in the shed? Good news! These races will allow you to compete on a bike with flat bars and a squishy fork, usually in an ‘Open’ or ‘Sport’ category.

  • National Championship: These ones are for all the marbles - the winners of these races get to call themselves national champions for the next 12 months.

  • National Series: These races form part of a national cyclocross series, comprised of several races, with series winners are determined by a point system that rewards consistent high placings. The AusCycling Cyclocross National Series is the only current example of this Down Under.

  • Racing for Adults: These are races for adults - most cyclocross and gravel rides and races will have this tag.

  • Racing for Kids: Cyclocross, like Wu-Tang, is for the children. These are races that will give your little shredder a chance to get on course themselves!

  • Singlespeed: Rockin’ the one cog? Awesome! These races will have a specific category for singlespeed riders.

  • Skills Session: Need to dial in your dismounts or speed up your starts? These rides will allow you to level up your CX skills.

  • Social Ride: Just want to go for a chill ride with other folks that like cyclocross and/or gravel riding? Here’s where you can find ‘em.

  • State Championships: The glory of being the fastest in your state is on the line. Will you be there?

  • State Series: The most popular level of CX competition in most Australian states, each being comprised of several races. Series winners are determined by a point system that rewards consistent high placings. Examples include the Numbat Cup in Western Australia, the Victorian CX Series, and the Crossfire Cup in South Australia.
We’ll also use this tag to identify the most prominent race series in areas where there’s no officially sanctioned state series, such as the Huttcross series in New Zealand.

  • Tracklocross: Does your cross bike also have a fixed rear wheel? If so, you can compete in a separate tracklocross category at these races.

  • Women Race With Women: If you’re a woman who’s more comfortable racing with and against other women, these races will have you in your happy place! All races with this tag will have women racing together, meaning you won’t have to share the course with any of the men’s grades.
